Scholarships

We offer two different types of Scholarship:
DAAD Epos Scholarship and DAAD NaWaM Scholarship

DAAD EPOS Scholarship

Foreign applicants from DAC-list countries may apply for one of the restricted number of scholarships of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and through the program “Development-Related Postgraduate Courses”.

With its development-oriented postgraduate study programmes, the DAAD promotes the training of specialists from development and newly industrialised countries. Well-trained local experts, who are networked with international partners, play an important part in the sustainable development of their countries. They are the best guarantee for a better future with less poverty, more education and health for all. The scholarships offer foreign graduates from development and newly industrialised countries from all disciplines and with at least two years’ professional experience the chance to take a postgraduate or Master’s degree.

Application deadline: September 30th of the year preceding the year of enrollment!

Who can apply?
Graduates with at least two years’ professional experience

Duration of funding
12 to 36 months (dependent on study programme)

Admission Requirements

  • Candidates fulfil the necessary academic requirements and can be expected to successfully complete a study programme in Germany (above-average result for first academic exam – top performance third, language skills)
  • Candidates have a Bachelor degree (usually a four-year course) in an appropriate subject
  • Candidates have at least two years’ professional experience
  • Candidates can prove their motivation is development-related and be expected to take on social responsibility and initiate and support processes of change in their personal and professional environment after their training/scholarship

Next to the general application documents, applicants are required to hand in the following additional documents:

  • DAAD application form: pdf download
  • 2 letters of recommendation from your university; the letter must have a signature and office stamp and must be of recent date
  • as far as possible: German language proof of beginners level (A1/A2)
  • professional letter/s of recommendation from your employer; the letter must have a signature and office stamp and must be of recent date (not in a sealed envelope)
  • confirmation of employment from the employer in your home country and, if possible, a guarantee of re-employment upon your return home

 

DAAD NaWaM Scholarship

Sustainable Water Management (“NaWaM”): Study Scholarships and Research Grants – Master’s Studies in Germany “NaWaM”

The application deadline is October 31st of the year preceding the year of enrollment!

The DAAD Special Program funded with the resources of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) on “Sustainable Water Management” is focused on the promotion of young scientists from Brazil, Chile, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Namibia, Peru, South Africa and Vietnam.

The program “Study Scholarships and Research Grants for Foreigners” offers highly-qualified students from the above countries the opportunity to study in selected English-language master degree programs at German universities in the thematic fields of sustainable water management. Studies are to be carried out in Germany. The objective of the program is to qualify experts in sustainable water management technology for the respective home countries, to enhance technological cooperation between those countries and Germany.

Duration of the funding: 36 month

24-month MSc program
6-month German language course prior to the program (obligatory)
6-month internship preferably at the end of the studies (obligatory)

Who can apply?

Applications are open to excellently qualified bachelor graduates from the above-mentioned countries who graduated in disciplines with relevance to sustainable water management no longer than six years ago.

Application Criteria

Applicants have to apply at TH Köln and at DAAD at the same time. TH Köln will evaluate the application according to the admission criteria of the university, DAAD will decide among the given DAAD criteria. Applicants who fulfill the criteria of both selection institutions will receive a DAAD scholarship and admission for the MSc Integrated Water Resources Management. 

Next to the general admission requirements of the TH Köln, applicants must also meet the following requirements for the DAAD:

  • Prior communication between the applicant and the university is required.
  • As a rule, applicants should have graduated as a Bachelor no longer than six years before the time of application.
  • Applicants who have been resident in Germany for longer than 15 months at the time of application cannot be considered
  • Language skills
    • Applicants are generally expected to have a good knowledge of English (TOEFL 80 or IELTS: 6.0)
    • If available, German language certificate (TestDaF, Zertifikat Deutsch, Deutsches Sprachdiplom, Sprachkenntnisformular DAAD)

Required Application Documents
Applicants have to hand in the following documents in a digital copy:

  • Online application form (DAAD website)
  • Full curriculum vitae in tabular form (3 pages max.)
  • Letter of Motivation (2 pages max., see attached instruction)
  • Summary of the Bachelor’s Thesis (2 pages max.)
  • Research Idea for the master thesis (2 pages) (Subject and content of the research idea should be in line with the course content of the master program Integrated Water Resources Management; subject must be of importance regarding the current scientific discussion; it should be written scientifically correct (e.g. citation, data quality, sources, consistency)
  • Proof of Contact with two of the desired master’s programs
  • University degree certificate indicating final grade(s) (Bachelor and Master); the certificate must be submitted before the grant-supported research begins if it is not available at the time of application
  • All university certificates on all annual examinations with individual grade (transcripts of records), incl. explanation of grading system
  • It would be beneficial to nominate a person from your home country as a mentor, preferably with industry contacts, or ideally a mentor of your current or prospective employer
  • It would be beneficial if you could identify a contact partner of the German water sector as a mentor and/ or prospective internship provider
  • Other documents which support your application (example: certificates of employment, proof of placement, etc.)
  • German or English translations of documents submitted in the national language
  • Language certificate as described above
  • APS Certificate (for Applicants from Mongolia and Vietnam)

In Addition one recent reference letter by a scientist of one’s own choice which provides information about your qualifications; this document must be submitted in a sealed envelope or must be sent directly by the referee to the indicated application location of DAAD.
